The Lon Las Cycle Challenge April 12th - 16th 2007

I intend to take on the ultimate cycling experience in Wales. This spectacular sponsored ride for Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales, sponsored by See Wales sightseeing tours and supported by Sustrans sustainable transport charity, spans 254 miles from Holyhead to Cardiff following Route 8 of the National Cycle Network. Crossing three distinct mountain ranges and covering some of Wales' most breathtaking scenery it promises to be a tough yet exhilarating 5 day cycling challenge. Day 1 Holyhead to Porthmadog via Caernarfon. 67 miles The challenge begins with an early start. Although we cover a lot of mileage today, the cycling is moderate, following a mainly flat and gently undulating trail. Day 2 Porthmadog to Corris via Dolgellau. 40 miles Up bright and early for a tough day of cycling. There will be some flat stretches to begin with but we will soon be faced with the steepest road climbs of the whole challenge, notably at Harlech and a little further on alongside Cadair Idris. Day 3 Corris to Rhayader via Llanidloes. 44 miles Another very strenuous day ahead for us. We climb from near sea level to 1640 ft over a distance of 8 miles. This is where we hit the highest point of the challenge at 510 metres. Day 4 Rhayader to Brecon via Builth. 49 miles With the hardest day behind us quiet lanes lead the way through lush countryside. Then after Builth Wells its a traffic free path through copper beech parkland which takes us alongside the river Wye. Day 5 The Taff Trail from Brecon to Cardiff. 54 miles One last push for our final day of the challenge! This final section starts out with a strenuous and long 1,015ft climb up to Taf Fechan forest but then it is relatively relaxing cycling for the rest of the way! The last miles follow the river Taff before finishing in a spectacular grand finale at the Oval Piazza in Cardiff Bay - the official end to the Lon Las Cymru route in Cardiff. Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales is a registered charity that provides specialised therapy to children in Wales who have cerebral palsy. Cyclists are required to raise £900 sponsorship which covers all accomodation, meals, transport, refreshments, cycle shirt and large donation to Bobath. The Bobath Centre, founded in 1957, is dedicated to treating children with cerebral palsy using the Bobath approach. Each child's problems are individually assessed by an inter-disciplinary team who develop a treatment plan. The aim of the treatment is to give the child the opportunity to experience more effective and efficient movement.
